Club Championships 2023
Finals Day September 2023
The sun shone, the beer flowed, the sausages and cakes were enjoyed ... and we had five very enjoyable and tight tennis matches to watch! The mixed and mens' doubles both went to championship tie break final sets with some amazing shot making from everyone. We had matches across the five main competitions, but we are still to complete the four plate competitions (for those who lost in the first round of the main draw.)
Congratulations to all our winners and runners up listed here, photos later in the email.
Ladies Singles: Vicky Spooner, runner up Millie Sutton (6-2, 6-3)
Mens Singles: James Swain, runner up Edward Meacock (6-2, 6-3)
Mixed Doubles: Lawan Gillespie and Marc Weeks, runners up Maggie Southerden and Andy Davidson (6-7, 6-2, 10-7)
Mens Doubles: Andy Davidson and Ian Freeman, runners up Marc Weeks and Doug Adams (5-7, 6-4, 11-9)
Ladies Doubles: Vicky Spooner and Maggie Southerden, runners up Fi Regan and Sandra Buckeldee (6-4, 6-3)
The organisation behind the championships is a lot, so here are some well deserved thank yous:
- Our wonderful Head Coach Alison who ran a kids fun drop in session which was incredibly popular, as well as hosting the Awards ceremony! The Junior and Adult coaching program continues to go from strength to strength with her on board and a full schedule is underway this term.
- The social committee who supported behind the scenes organising cake, beer, BBQ and bunting
- Andy Davidson who, for the third year running, organised everything to do with the whole tournament over the three month period.
This year seemed to be even trickier than ever with holidays preventing matches being played scheduled despite starting a month earlier, so thank you Andy for never ending patience
The committee were delighted to see so many Juniors in the overall tournament with a teenager in each of the singles finals. There will be a Junior Club Championships day coming up in October, so stand by for more information from Aman and Alison on that.
The plate matches had a deadline of finishing by the end of September, so we will do a separate wrap up of those when the plate winners are known.
