Club Championships update
This years club championships kicked off in June with 51 entrants across 5 competitions.
There have been lots of great matches to date and we are now in the quarter final and semi final stages as we gear up to a finals day on 2 September. We are also running 5 plate competitions for those who lost their first game a chance to get more competitive matches.
Do keep an eye out for announcements as to who ends up making it to finals day if you are not participating we do encourage people to come along and watch and have a good social. Saturday 2nd September is the date for your diary.
Could those of you with cups from last year kindly arrange to get them back to Sue Salmon who is going to collect them ready for the new winners!
Play Your Way to Wimbledon Wrap up
This year we hosted the LTA Play Your Way to Wimbledon tournament for members only. Very popular for our first time running this. The winners all got medals and were invited by the LTA to the regional stages.
Amy Carson age 13 came 2nd in the regional stage in Aylesbury on the 15th July! Huge congratulations to Amy!
Paul Passey and Marc Weeks also competed in their regional stage at the end of June.
Unfortunately due to short notice from the LTA and previous commitments our other winners were not able to make their regional stage. Vicky and Lucinda were our ladies winners, and Samuel Mooney our boys winner. Nonetheless well done for having been invited by the LTA to attend!
We look forward to running this again next year!
Court 5 and 6 Resurfacing update
The resurfacing of courts 5 and 6 is now underway and will be completed during August. There will be 3 phases of work:
- Groundwork: The court has been spiked to improve drainage, court edge repairs will be completed and new net post sockets and centre anchors installed
- Tarmac laying: The new surface will be laid, compacted and rolled flat
- Painting: The tarmac will need around 2 weeks to harden and then the courts will be painted in dark green with mid green outer
The courts will be available for play once the paint has dried for a few days. If you have any questions during the work, please contact Alan Polding. [email protected]
Pavilion Upgrade
We are delighted that Ashford kitchens have kindly donated some new kitchen cupboards and a worktop, so we can replace the ones in situ. They were delivered to the pavilion last Friday. We plan to get these fitted asap.
Ideas for upgrade
- Paint the more stained pavilion internal walls and the rafters (any help with painting appreciated)
- Replace the floor tiles (Kirstin has sourced some blue ones)
- Take down some of the old framed certificates and replace with some posters of recent players. ( any help with this would be great as Sue is struggling to find them.)
- Paint the notice board and smarten it up.
- Replace the table PVCS or replace the tables.
- Replace the bins.
- We need a replacement free-standing under-counter fridge, as the old one isn't working well or looking good. So if you have one you don't want....
Captains updates
Ladies Captains update (Maggie Southerden):
Ladies 1's played 3 matches so far: Won 2, drawn 1, lost 1. The final match vs David Lloyd Beaconsfield on 15th July has been rescheduled to 17th September as it was abandoned after starting due to weather.
Ladies 2's played 3 matches so far: Won 2, drawn 1. Two matches still to play
Maggie has welcomed a lot of new players into our squads, at this rate we will be fielding 3 ladies teams next summer.
Mens Captains update (Andy Davidson):
The mens 1st team are having a good season in the bucks league, winning 2 games convincingly and drawing the other. With 3 games left the team have a good chance of pushing for promotions come the end of the season
The mens 2nd team also play in the Bucks league and is a great chance to give both our vets and those just looking to get involved in matches the chance to play. The team have had both good wins and close losses this season and look to continue to have fun on courts for their final couple of games.
If you are interested in finding out about teams tennis, please contact Andy.
Mixed team update (Doug Adams and Vicky Spooner):
The First team have now played 2 of their 5 matches: Won - 1, Lost 1
22/04/2023 - Away to Chesham 1879 2 lost 5-3
24/06/2023 - Home to Little Chalfont
A strong win for the club. Special mention goes to James who played his first match for FC.
We still have Beaconsfield (22/07) and Chalfont St Giles (27/08), and a rescheduled Burnham match to play, so have a good chance of getting promoted.
The Second team have now played 3 of their 5 matches. Won - 1, Lost 2
Home to Chalfont St Peter 2 won 8-0
03/06/2023 Away to Newport Pagnell lost 5-3
24/06/2023 Away to Chesham Bois 3 lost 8-0 against a very strong team
We still have Hambledon (05/08) and Chalfont St Giles (27/08) to play, so will be hoping to win at least one of the two remaining matches.
Lastly, we are entering 2 ladies teams, 2 mens and 2 mixed teams for matches over the winter, plus some friendly matches. If anyone is interested in playing for the team please contact the captains!
Would you like to join our Committee?
Some of our very longstanding Committee members would welcome the opportunity to step down at the end of the year.
If you would be keen to get involved Chairman Peter would really love to hear from you. [email protected] He can talk to you about the different roles and the level of commitment that would be needed from each of them. Some roles are very low commitment, but very rewarding as you get the opportunity to support this thriving community club.
