Club Championships 2021
The 2021 Championships saw a good number of entries and lots of fantastic matches across 5 main Competitions as well as in 3 plate competitions in Men’s Singles Mixed Doubles and Men’s doubles (for those who lost in the first round of the main draw.)
Main Finals Day
Finals day was held Sunday 5th September, when in glorious warm sunshine four finals were staged: ladies' and men's singles, and the ladies' and men's doubles. The mixed doubles and plate finals were postponed due to injuries/availability.
On finals day, both ladies' and men's singles finals were keenly contested. Vicky eventually got the better of Maggie, after going a break down in the first set, and fought off a later fightback by Maggie. The match between Simon and Paul saw some incredible rallies as they traded two close sets, and therefore a championship tie-break was needed to separate them. Despite Paul taking an early lead in the tie break, Simon eventually triumphed!
The ladies doubles featured experienced pair 'the two Gills', who were beaten by singles finalists Maggie and Vicky after a well-fought match. In the men’s doubles, singles winner Simon paired up with Conor (who won the men’s doubles last year) and they prevailed 6-2, 6-4 over Andy (who had triumphed with Conor in 2020) and Luke.
The many spectators witnessed a high standard of tennis throughout the afternoon, with many fine serves, exquisite angled volleys and fearsome rallies. Grateful thanks go to Andy for arranging the whole championships, and to Sue, Vicky and others for providing tea and cakes throughout the afternoon.
Other Finals
The mixed doubles was played later (due to an injury) on a dreary September evening. Ffibi and Luke and raced away with the first set 6-0. Karen and Rob came back hard in the second set and forced a tie break, only to fall just short succumbing 7-5 to allow Ffibi and Luke to take the title.
The mixed doubles plate final was played on evening of Friday 10th September where we saw a well fought game with lots of acrobatics from both gents at the net! In the end Doug and Maggie triumphed 6-4 6-3 over Gill and Dave.
The men’s plate took place on Saturday 11th September, and saw the experience of Peter take on the energy of Marc; in the end Marc had too much for Peter despite a very close second set and so Marc was the one to take home the trophy.
The Men’s doubles plate was a round robin format where Matt and Tim managed to successfully see off all their opponents and so be crowned plate champions. Photos are below, or as a pdf here.
